RAW-(Material) at Weaverville Yoga - WORKSHOP

Dissemination of the RAW-(Material) project as pedagogical method to investigate the Self as medium for art, then the Self in relationship to the raw materials of nature and the environment as method for artistic creation.

Living Art Workshop

The Living Art workshop took place at the Weaverville Yoga studio space on Sunday May 15 at 2 – 5pm. Its purpose was to demonstrate the working method I have utilized throughout the Raw-(Material) project – beginning with the pedagogical structure I have developed to investigate the Self as medium for art, a set of explorations I call Body Tuning – then some of the explorations I have developed for the investigation of Self in relationship with Other, which I call Creative Response.
Within the context of the RAW-(Material) project, Other has been the raw materials of nature and the environment.

The workshop was three hours long. So I decided to use the first two hours in a brief introduction to almost all of my Body Tuning explorations. Rather than going in-depth on just a few of them, I wanted to introduce all the concepts to the workshop participants so that they would have some working knowledge of the whole.
In the third hour we applied this knowledge of the body to interaction and relationship with nature and the environment. Ending with a movement and sound improvisation utilizing the discoveries that resulted from the afternoon’s explorations.

Pedagogy Text Files

The text in these files describes the basic format of all the exploration exercises I facilitated at the Weaverville Yoga studio Living Art workshop. In the context of this workshop they were adapted to suit the specific goals of the RAW-(Material) project and the individuals participating.

RAW-(Material) at Weaverville Yoga - VIDEO SCREENING

Dissemination of the RAW-(Material) project Nature Specimens as a live video screening performance.

The RAW-(Material) Nature Specimens video screening took place in the Weaverville Yoga studio space on Sunday May 15 2016 at 6pm.
It was presented as a live performance event with narration and poetic text from my journal, plus live improvised sound in collaboration with musician Elisa Faires (please refer to the Performance report for information about Elisa.)

I created a Power Point as the vehicle to present a series of select videos from my Nature Specimens journal series that were each five minutes long or under and at a satisfactory stage of editing. Some of the pieces already had original sound that worked well and some had a sound score I had created and added to the video. For the other pieces that did not have sound, Elisa and I created live sound as the piece was playing.

RAW-(Material) at Weaverville Yoga - INSTALLATION

Dissemination of the RAW-(Material) journal series as a media installation.

The RAW-(Material) installation was open for viewing before and after each live event at Weaverville Yoga studio, in the studio office space, May 14 & 15 2016.

The purpose of this installation was to invite the audience into my process, to be able to view any of the journal entries at their leisure, to peruse through my videos, images and text journal entries in a personal interaction. It was set up in the office space at the studio to create the context of being in someone’s private workspace, an intimate invitation.

In keeping with the honesty of a journal and the concept of the project as my “material culture”, I utilized the materials available and accessible to me to present the work.
Each video piece was burned onto a DVD, given a hand-written title and displayed in a sleeve case on the office desk.
Two old-school TV monitors with DVD players were provided to play the disks on.
I selected images from all the journal entries and created a slide show that was displayed on digital picture frame placed on top of the desk shelves.
A black leather journal containing my narrative and poetic text journal entries was placed on the middle shelf with a magnifying glass that lights up.
I placed colorful sticky notes on the shelves with instructions to the viewer.

RAW-(Material) at Weaverville Yoga - PERFORMANCE

Dissemination of the RAW-(Material) project as a collaborative in-the-moment-composition Dance & Music performance.

The RAW-(Material) Dance & Music performance took place at Weaverviile Yoga studio space on Saturday May 14 2016 at 7pm.
My collaborator for this event was musician and composer Elisa Faires
Elisa and I have been collaborating since 2007 and she has been involved in my process throughout the development of my performance method.

In order to represent the mode of my interactions with the raw materials of nature in the RAW-(Material) journal series, I prepared a basket of nature objects that we could respond to in movement and sound.
This basket was offered to audience members to pick out one item and to express their thoughts on that object.

We began with a series of short, two-minute “gesture drawings” on each of the objects that audience members had picked out, using their comments to inform our response.
These were as follows:

Shell (used to contain a life)

Yellow Flower (energy of new life)

Stick (old, dry, twisted)

Pod (angular shapes, soft fuzzy texture)

Feather (black & white stripes)

Ivy (interesting mottled pattern)

We then continued with a ten-minute piece, drawing from qualities of the nature objects I have interacted with throughout the RAW-(Material) series to inform our movement and sound.
Then concluded with an improvisation where we invited audience members to join us in responding to the nature objects from the basket and to each other.

Each section ended with the audience making wind sounds to blow the performance away in the breeze.

CIRCLE MODERN DANCE - Performance Piece

Dissemination of Living Art pedagogy as a working method of instruction and facilitation for performance development – using the RAW-(Material) project to provide theme and context.

Living Art workshop and Raw Material performance piece with Circle Modern Dance

In 1991 I was involved in founding the dance theatre company Circle Modern Dance in Knoxville TN and served as co-director, dancer, choreographer and teacher with the company until the year 2000. Now, in 2016, the company is still going strong and celebrating its 25th anniversary with a whole year of special programming.

As part of the celebrations, CMD received funding to invite the founding directors back to work with the company again during this anniversary year.
I decided to incorporate my RAW-(Material) project and Living Art pedagogy into my work with the company as a guest artist.
I introduced them to the project with a solo performance piece for their winter show “Modern Dance Primitive Light” in December, then returned in March to teach a Living Art workshop and structure a performance piece they could continue to develop using the tools provided by the Living Art method.

LIVING ART workshop with CIRCLE MODERN DANCE - REPORT

On May 19th, members of the company performed a short version of the resulting piece for a CMD fundraising event. http://knoxfocus.com/2016/05/12330/

The narrative arch of the piece is a story of personal evolution and individuation.
Beginning as a primordial mass, the dancers gradually each take on their own form and character in response and relationship with other forms of nature and the environment.
Utilizing the Living Art tools from the workshop to investigate the Self as raw material and its relationship to other raw materials, the dancers each developed their own role in this piece.
The piece is structured in such a way that it is a pliable, plastic, adjustable entity that can constantly be developed.

This is their inaugural version.
