Dialogue: a conversation between two.
Conversation: interactive, spontaneous
communication; important to socialization.
Socialization: a continuing process by which an
individual acquires a personal identity
through responsive acts.
Response: any behavior that results from an
external or internal stimulus.
Part One: interactive, spontaneous, and
responsive conversation[s] between the artists,
spectators, and raw materials of self portrayal
across an expansive space.
The raw materiality of the Self performed
through a continual process of responsive
exploration of fragments of art, life, and space
as collaborators and authors reforming
the otherwise distinct roles within the
subject-object relationship until they merge as one entity, comprised of many
fragments, no longer purely subject or object.
Part Two: a dialogue between Claire Elizabeth
Barratt and Robyn Thomas, moderated
by Laura Gonzalez, addressing the conversation[s]
of Part One in conjunction to the
overlapping ideas explored by Ms. Barratt and
Ms. Thomas in their individual work.

RAW-(Material) - BUTOH
Dissemination of the RAW-(Material) project as a Butoh performance
piece.
The weekend after the RAW-(Material): Self as Living Art presentations at Weaverville
Yoga studio, my musical collaborator for those events, Elisa Faires,
spontaneously invited me to come and do a Butoh version of the project. It was
for an experimental music and Butoh dance event curated by Cher Von from
Cincinnati at a local Asheville music venue, The Sly Grog.
For this performance, I decided to use all
the foliage left over from EarthDay – which now had a kind of dry, crunchy
texture – as well as projected images of the pictures I had used in the digital
picture frame for the installation at Weaverville Yoga studio.
We also kept the idea of asking for audience
response to nature objects from the basket we had used for the performance at
Weaverville Yoga.

RAW-(Material) at Weaverville Yoga - WORKSHOP
Dissemination of the RAW-(Material) project as pedagogical method to investigate the
Self as medium for art, then the Self in relationship to the raw materials of
nature and the environment as method for artistic creation.
Living Art Workshop
The Living Art workshop took place at the
Weaverville Yoga studio space on Sunday May 15 at 2 – 5pm. Its purpose was to
demonstrate the working method I have utilized throughout the Raw-(Material) project – beginning with
the pedagogical structure I have developed to investigate the Self as medium
for art, a set of explorations I call Body Tuning – then some of the
explorations I have developed for the investigation of Self in relationship
with Other, which I call Creative Response.
Within the context of the RAW-(Material) project, Other has been
the raw materials of nature and the environment.
The workshop was three hours long. So I
decided to use the first two hours in a brief introduction to almost all of my
Body Tuning explorations. Rather than going in-depth on just a few of them, I
wanted to introduce all the concepts to the workshop participants so that they
would have some working knowledge of the whole.
In the third hour we applied this knowledge
of the body to interaction and relationship with nature and the environment.
Ending with a movement and sound improvisation utilizing the discoveries that
resulted from the afternoon’s explorations.

RAW-(Material) at Weaverville Yoga - VIDEO SCREENING
Dissemination of the RAW-(Material) project Nature Specimens as a live video screening
performance.
The RAW-(Material)
Nature Specimens video screening took place in the Weaverville Yoga studio
space on Sunday May 15 2016 at 6pm.
It was presented as a live performance event
with narration and poetic text from my journal, plus live improvised sound in
collaboration with musician Elisa Faires (please refer to the Performance
report for information about Elisa.)
I created a Power Point as the vehicle to present
a series of select videos from my Nature Specimens journal series that were
each five minutes long or under and at a satisfactory stage of editing. Some of
the pieces already had original sound that worked well and some had a sound
score I had created and added to the video. For the other pieces that did not
have sound, Elisa and I created live sound as the piece was playing.

RAW-(Material) at Weaverville Yoga - INSTALLATION
Dissemination of the RAW-(Material)
journal series as a media installation.
The RAW-(Material)
installation was open for viewing before and after each live event at
Weaverville Yoga studio, in the studio office space, May 14 & 15 2016.
The purpose of this installation was to
invite the audience into my process, to be able to view any of the journal
entries at their leisure, to peruse through my videos, images and text journal
entries in a personal interaction. It was set up in the office space at the
studio to create the context of being in someone’s private workspace, an
intimate invitation.
In keeping with the honesty of a journal and
the concept of the project as my “material culture”, I utilized the materials
available and accessible to me to present the work.
Each video piece was burned onto a DVD, given
a hand-written title and displayed in a sleeve case on the office desk.
Two old-school TV monitors with DVD players
were provided to play the disks on.
I selected images from all the journal entries
and created a slide show that was displayed on digital picture frame placed on
top of the desk shelves.
A black leather journal containing my
narrative and poetic text journal entries was placed on the middle shelf with a
magnifying glass that lights up.
I placed colorful sticky notes on the shelves
with instructions to the viewer.
